CAD [Computer Aided Design]

CAD has been used in education for many years. With the improvement in computer speed and capabilities the type and nature of CAD programs has changed. The change from surface modeling to solid modeling has enabled the draftsperson to become the designer and model solutions in three dimensions, simulate and test, then develop 2D drawings if required. This concept has revolutionized design and CAD, the next step links CAD Design to a machine process[CNC Mill] that creates a 3D model in a variety of materials. What was hand carved in the past can now be created to exact dimensions and then duplicated many times when the design is perfected.

BENEFITS OF CAD DESIGN

Using 3D design modeling greatly improves design quality because it is a more complete process than 2D design. As a result, many human errors that can occur with traditional 2D design methods are avoided. In the past problems such as component collisions, incorrect quantities or parts that don't fit, would happen because a designer who works in only 2D is forced to hold much of the information mentally. It is this point that gives rise to errors because the brain CANNOT visualize to exact scale. Reducing human error by using the 3D modeling design methods shown in our 3D Autocad manual minimizes the need for re-work because the design quality is greatly improved.
